Favorite Fruits & Veggies On The Grill
When warm summer weather hits, it’s fun to fire up the grill every night. But while your kids may be happy with a steady diet of hamburgers and hot dogs, you know you need to sneak more fruits and vegetables into their diet. Fortunately, just about anything you find in the produce section can be put on the grill—and made kid friendly.
Fruits become even sweeter when grilled. Some great selections for grilled fruits include bananas, mangos, peaches, watermelon and pineapple. Try adding a twist to your grilled fruit by sprinkling with cinnamon or drizzling with honey (perfect in grilled lemonade!). Create colorful fruit kabobs and serve them on skewers or, for a treat, with a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream or pound cake (sans the rum) for dessert.
When it comes to veggies, squash, zucchini, broccoli, peppers and carrots can be chopped into kid-friendly bite-sized bits. Veggies taste great plain but, for an added burst of flavor, sprinkle them with a little bit of garlic, red pepper flakes, rosemary or sage while on the grill.
6 Quick Tips for BBQing your Kids’ Favourite Fruits and Veggies:
- Choose fruits and veggies that are firm and ripe so they will hold up on the grill.
- Cut up the fruits and veggies into large equal pieces, typically ranging 1 inch thick. This prevents them from falling through the grates. (If grilling bananas, place it on the grill whole or cut it down the middle).
- Keep the skin on so they will maintain shape.
- Lightly spray with cooking oil or brush with melted butter before grilling to avoid sticking.
- Avoid direct heat by placing fruits and veggies on the outer edge of the grate.
- Fruits and veggies contain water that can become extremely hot when grilled. Always allow proper cooling time before taking the first bite.
